Types of Writing
These are some different types of writing you might be asked to do. Sometimes students are asked to write using a combination of these. It’s important to understand the type of writing your teacher is asking you to do.
The topic is obesity, but each type of writing will approach the topic differently.
Persuasive: The government should tax junk food in order to reduce childhood obesity.
Narrative: After 10 years of struggling with obesity, my life changed one day.
Process: There are several steps you can take to live a healthier life
Cause/Effect:
Focus on causes: In order to solve the problem of childhood obesity, it’s important to understand its causes.
Focus on effects: If the government doesn’t do something to manage childhood obesity, many children who suffer from this will be affected in negative ways.
Problem/Solution: Because childhood obesity is a growing problem in the U.S. , schools need to do more to help children and families become healthier.
Compare/Contrast: Thompson Middle School and Lincoln Middle School are both in the same state, but one is doing a much better job tackling childhood obesity.
Essays have three parts:
An Introduction (usually 1 paragraph)
A Body (1,2, 3, or more paragraphs)
A Conclusion (usually 1 paragraph)
